Speed is distance over time, and the three quantities determine each other completely — any two give the third. The conversions matter more than they look: 10 m/s is 36 km/h, and the factor is exactly 3.6 because there are 3,600 seconds in an hour and 1,000 metres in a kilometre.

How the Speed Distance Time Calculator works

Speed is distance over time, and the three quantities determine each other completely — any two give the third. Results come in m/s, km/h and mph, because the conversion is where most of the mistakes actually happen.

Where to go next

The Speed Distance Time question rarely arrives on its own. These are the ones that usually come with it:

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate speed?

Divide distance by time. 100 metres in 10 seconds is 10 m/s.

How do I convert m/s to km/h?

Multiply by 3.6. The factor is exact: 3,600 seconds in an hour divided by 1,000 metres in a kilometre.

How do I convert m/s to mph?

Multiply by 2.23694. So 10 m/s is 22.37 mph.

Is this average speed or instantaneous speed?

Average. It assumes a constant rate over the whole distance, which is what distance divided by time gives you regardless of how the speed varied along the way.
