The square-cube law
Surface area grows with the square of size while volume grows with the cube. Double every dimension and the surface quadruples while the contents multiply by eight.
The consequence is that the ratio between them falls as objects get larger, and that single fact explains a surprising amount of the physical world.
What it explains
Small animals lose heat faster, because they carry far more skin per unit of body to keep warm — which is why a mouse must eat constantly and an elephant must work to shed heat instead.
Crushed ice melts faster than a block of the same mass, for the same reason: breaking it up multiplies the surface without changing the volume.
Large storage tanks cost less per litre than small ones, since the steel scales with the surface and the capacity with the volume. It is also why cells stay microscopic — beyond a certain size, a cell cannot move nutrients across its membrane fast enough to supply its own interior.

How do I calculate surface area?
Add up the area of every face. For curved shapes there are standard formulas — 4πr² for a sphere, 2πrh + 2πr² for a cylinder — which this page applies once you pick a shape.
What is lateral surface area?
The sides only, excluding the top and bottom. It is the figure you want when wrapping a label around a tin or painting the walls but not the ceiling.
Why does the surface-to-volume ratio matter?
Because surface grows with the square of size while volume grows with the cube, so the ratio falls as things get bigger. That single fact explains why small animals lose heat faster, why crushed ice melts quickly and why large tanks are cheaper per litre.
Does a cone's surface area use the slant height?
Yes — √(r² + h²), not the vertical height. Using the vertical height understates the curved surface, and it is the commonest mistake with cones.
