How do I calculate volume?
It depends on the shape — pick one above. Prisms and cylinders are base area times height; cones and pyramids are a third of that; a sphere is 4πr³⁄3.
How do I convert volume to litres?
If you measured in centimetres, divide cubic centimetres by 1,000. A litre is defined as a cube 10 cm on each side, so the conversion is exact.
Why does doubling the size increase volume eightfold?
Because volume depends on three dimensions, and doubling each multiplies them together: 2 × 2 × 2. This is why a pizza twice the diameter is four times the food, and a tank twice the size holds eight times as much.
What is the difference between volume and capacity?
Volume is the space a shape occupies; capacity is what it holds. For a container with thin walls they are nearly the same, but a thick-walled vessel holds noticeably less than its outside dimensions suggest.
