The equivalence point is where the equivalents match, not where the moles do — a diprotic acid needs twice the base per mole. Note also that the equivalence point and the endpoint are different things: the first is stoichiometric, the second is where the indicator changes, and the gap between them is the indicator error. For a strong acid with a strong base the equivalence pH is 7, but titrating a weak acid puts it above 7, which is why phenolphthalein rather than methyl orange is correct there.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate titrant volume?

Multiply the analyte's concentration, volume and equivalents, then divide by the titrant's concentration and equivalents. 25 mL of 0.1 M HCl needs 25 mL of 0.1 M NaOH.

What is the difference between the equivalence point and the endpoint?

The equivalence point is stoichiometric; the endpoint is where the indicator changes colour. The difference is indicator error, and choosing the right indicator minimises it.

Why is the equivalence pH not always 7?

Only for a strong acid with a strong base. Titrating a weak acid leaves its conjugate base in solution, pushing the equivalence pH above 7 — which is why phenolphthalein rather than methyl orange is correct there.
