Water Footprint Calculator
Shorter showers are the smallest term in the sum.
Work out Water Footprint. Shorter showers are the smallest term in the sum. Counts the thing everyone forgets to count.
Water per year
1,336 m³
3,661 litres a day · direct use is only 4.4%
Direct use — taps, showers, the washing machine — is typically under a tenth of a personal water footprint. That is why shorter showers barely move the total and why the advice everyone hears is aimed at the smallest term in the sum. The rest is embedded in food and goods. A kilogram of beef carries around 15,000 litres and a kilogram of vegetables a few hundred, so what is on the plate moves the number by more than any bathroom fitting can. Not all water is equal, which this total hides. Rainfall used by a crop in a wet region and groundwater pumped from a depleting aquifer both count as litres here, and they are not remotely the same problem.
How the Water Footprint Calculator works
Direct and embedded water use side by side, broken down by source. Direct use is typically under a tenth of the total, which is why the advice everyone hears targets the smallest part of it.

Frequently asked questions
What is a water footprint?
All the water used on your behalf, not just what comes out of your taps. Direct use is typically under 10% of it; the rest is embedded in food and goods.
Do shorter showers help?
Marginally. A shower is a few percent of a personal footprint, so halving it moves the total by a rounding error. Dietary change moves it by tens of percent.
How much water is in food?
Around 15,000 litres a kilogram for beef, 4,300 for chicken, and a few hundred for most vegetables. That range is why diet dominates a water footprint.
Is all water equal in this total?
No, and the total hides it. Rainfall used by a crop in a wet region and groundwater pumped from a depleting aquifer both count as litres, and they are not the same problem.
What is virtual water?
Another name for embedded water — the water used to produce a good, which travels with it when it is traded. A country importing food is importing the water that grew it.
