Why no margin is added
Every other piece of heating equipment on this site gets a margin for warm-up. A stove does not, because the usual error runs the other way — stoves are habitually specified too large, and the consequences are worse than for any other heat source.
An oversized stove overheats the room at its designed output, so it gets run with the air closed down. That produces incomplete combustion: cool smoky burning that deposits creosote and tar in the flue.
Creosote is flammable, and it is what chimney fires burn. So an oversized stove is not merely inefficient — it creates the condition that leads to the most serious failure mode a solid fuel appliance has.
Wood quality and how it burns
Firewood should be under about 20% moisture content, measured on a freshly split face. Wet wood spends a large share of its energy boiling off water, burns cool, and produces exactly the smoke and tar that line a flue.
Seasoned-looking wood stacked outside for a year can still be well above 20% if it was never covered. A moisture meter costs very little and settles the question, and it is the single most useful tool a stove owner can own.
Softwood burns perfectly well when dry and gives less heat per volume than hardwood. The traditional advice against it mostly reflects that softwood is often burned insufficiently seasoned rather than anything about the wood itself.
