Amazon revises fee schedules at least annually and adds new surcharges more often. These defaults are a starting point — the figures in your own fee preview are the ones that describe your ASINs.

Break-even price

$15.21

at 15% referral fee

Costs excluding referral fee$12.93
Break-even price$15.21
Contribution at your price$12.56
Units to cover fixed costs4

Break-even is costs divided by (1 − referral rate), not costs plus the referral fee — because the fee is a percentage of the price you are solving for. Adding 15% to $12.93 gives $14.87, which is $0.34 short.

How the Amazon Break-Even Calculator works

Break-even price is costs divided by one minus the referral rate — not costs plus the referral fee. The fee is a percentage of the price you are solving for, so adding it afterwards always lands short.

Not financial advice. Marketplace fees change, and they vary by country, plan and seller status. Every rate here is an editable default, not a quoted price — check the platform's current fee schedule before you price a product against it. This is not tax or business advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a break-even price?

Take every cost that is not a percentage of price — product, fulfilment, storage, prep — and divide by one minus the referral rate. At 15%, divide by 0.85.

Why not just add the referral fee?

Because the fee is charged on the final price. Adding 15% to your costs gives a price whose 15% fee is larger than the amount you added, so you finish below break-even.

Should advertising be in break-even?

Include it if the product needs advertising to sell at all, which on Amazon it usually does. Break-even without advertising is a number you can only achieve by not selling anything.

How many units cover my fixed costs?

Fixed costs divided by contribution per unit, where contribution is price less all variable costs including the referral fee. For most sellers the only meaningful fixed cost is the monthly plan.
