What is a bill of materials?

A structured list of every component and quantity needed to make one unit, with costs attached. It is the foundation of any accurate product cost.

How does scrap affect a BOM?

Each component's required quantity rises by its own scrap factor. A component with 8% scrap needs 8.7% more material, and stacking several of those adds up.

Should the BOM include labour?

Component costs are materials; labour is usually held separately as assembly or conversion cost. Combining them makes it harder to see which is rising.

How often should a BOM be re-costed?

Whenever component prices move materially, and at least annually. A BOM costed at last year's prices flatters margin for as long as nobody checks.
