Transport emissions vary enormously by mode, air freight is roughly fifty times more carbon-intensive per tonne-kilometre than sea. Offsetting is cheap enough per parcel to be practical, though reducing emissions at source is both better and usually cheaper.

The maths behind it

Carbon-neutral shipping cost is emissions × offset price. Emissions for a parcel are approximated as weight × distance × an emissions factor for the mode, expressed in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent per tonne-kilometre.

Typical factors: around 1,000 g per tonne-km for air freight, 60 to 150 g for road, and 10 to 40 g for sea. The two-order-of-magnitude spread between air and sea is the whole story of shipping emissions.

Putting numbers to it

The 1.54 kg parcel travelling 1,600 km by road at 100 g per tonne-km: 0.00154 tonnes × 1,600 × 100 g = 246 g of CO₂e, about a quarter of a kilogram.

At an offset price of $15 per tonne, that is $0.0037, under half a cent. At a higher-quality removal credit at $150 a tonne, $0.037. Either way it is a rounding error against a $9.85 parcel.

The same parcel by air freight from Asia: 9,000 km at 1,000 g per tonne-km. Is 13.9 kg of CO₂e, 56 times more, and $0.21 to $2.08 to offset. The inbound leg dominates the footprint completely, and it is the leg nobody offsets.

Where it is unreliable

Offsetting the last mile while air-freighting inbound stock addresses a few percent of the actual footprint. The arithmetic above makes that plain, and marketing that highlights carbon-neutral delivery while the goods flew in is the kind of claim that attracts regulatory attention.

Offset quality also varies enormously. Cheap avoidance credits have been widely criticised for overstating their effect, and several jurisdictions have tightened the rules on what may be described as carbon neutral. A claim built on a $3 credit is a reputational liability rather than an asset.

How to act on this

Calculate the whole footprint before choosing what to offset. For most importing businesses the inbound freight and the packaging exceed the outbound parcel by a wide margin, and the cheapest genuine reduction is usually a mode change on the inbound leg.

Then be precise in what you claim. Saying you offset outbound delivery emissions is accurate and defensible; saying shipping is carbon neutral when only one leg is covered is neither.

Reduction before offsetting

The interventions that actually reduce parcel emissions are the same ones that reduce cost, which is unusually convenient. Smaller boxes mean less volume moved; consolidated orders mean fewer parcels; ground rather than air means a tenth of the emissions; and fewer failed deliveries means fewer repeat journeys.

Packaging is the other large term and it is entirely within your control. Right-sized boxes, recycled content and removing plastic void fill all reduce the footprint measurably and cost less than the alternative in most cases.

Offsetting is best treated as what covers the residual after those changes, not as a substitute for them. It is also cheap enough on outbound parcels, under a cent each on the numbers above, that there is no real financial argument against doing it, provided the credits are good and the claim made about them is accurate.
