How the International Shipping Cost Calculator works

International shipping adds duty, import tax and clearance to the freight cost, and the crucial decision is who pays them. Delivered Duty Paid means you do, and the customer is not surprised. Delivered Duty Unpaid means they are — and a meaningful share refuse the parcel when the courier asks for money.

Not financial advice. Marketplace fees change, and they vary by country, plan and seller status. Every rate here is an editable default, not a quoted price — check the platform's current fee schedule before you price a product against it. This is not tax or business advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DDP and DDU?

Under DDP you pay duty and import tax up front and the customer receives the parcel with nothing to pay. Under DDU the customer is billed on delivery. DDP costs more and converts better; DDU shifts the cost and the surprise onto the buyer.

What happens if a customer refuses to pay duty?

The parcel is returned or abandoned, and you pay return freight plus the original shipping, having lost the sale. Refusal rates on unexpected duty bills are high enough that DDP is usually worth its premium for consumer goods.

What is a de minimis threshold?

The shipment value below which a country waives duty and sometimes tax. Thresholds vary widely and several have been reduced in recent years. Shipping just under a threshold can materially change the landed cost for the buyer.

Do I need a commercial invoice and HS code?

Yes, for almost all commercial international shipments. An accurate HS code determines the duty rate; a vague description causes delays and sometimes a higher assessed rate. Getting the classification right is worth the effort.
