Carpet comes in fixed widths — commonly 4 m or 5 m — so the practical constraint is usually how the width fits the room rather than the total area. A room 4.2 m wide takes a 5 m roll and wastes 0.8 m down its whole length, which is why measuring the room's short dimension against available widths matters more than the square metres.

Roll width, not area, sets the waste

Carpet is manufactured in fixed widths — commonly 4 m or 5 m — and it cannot be joined invisibly in the middle of a room. So the question is not how many square metres the room contains but how the room's short dimension fits an available width.

A room 4.2 m wide is the worst case. It exceeds a 4 m roll, so it takes a 5 m roll and wastes 0.8 m down its entire length. On a 5 m long room that is 4 m² thrown away — a fifth of the order — and no amount of careful measurement recovers it.

Which is why the practical first step is to measure the room's narrower dimension and check it against the widths a supplier actually stocks. Where a room is a little over a width, the alternatives are a seam in a low-traffic position or accepting the waste.

Pile direction, and why offcuts are less useful than they look

Carpet looks noticeably different depending on which way the pile lies, because light reflects differently along and against it. Two pieces in the same room laid in opposite directions read as two different shades under any raking light.

That constraint removes most of the flexibility offcuts would otherwise give. A large offcut cut from the length cannot simply be rotated to fill a width, which is exactly what would make the arithmetic work out.

It also determines where a seam can go. Seams should run away from the main light source and out of the main traffic path, and both pieces must run the same way — which sometimes forces more material than a purely geometric solution would need.

Measuring, and the places people come up short

Measure at the widest point of each rectangle, including into any alcove, and add 50 to 100 mm all round for trimming. Rooms are rarely square, and cutting exactly to a measured size leaves nothing to work with when the walls turn out not to be parallel.

Doorways are the most commonly missed. Carpet normally runs to the centre of the door opening, where it meets the covering in the next room under a threshold bar. Measuring to the wall face leaves every doorway a strip short.

Underlay needs its own calculation, since it comes in different roll widths and has no pile direction. Its waste is usually lower for that reason, and it should be specified for the traffic rather than to match the carpet — too soft an underlay under a heavy-traffic carpet lets the backing flex and fail early.

How do I calculate how much carpet I need?

Multiply length by width, subtract any areas not carpeted, and add a waste allowance. Then divide by the coverage per roll and round up — you cannot buy part of a roll.

How do I measure a room that is not square?

Break it into rectangles, measure each and add them. Measure at the widest point of each rectangle, since carpet cannot be stretched to fill a gap.

What is the difference between fitted and loose lay?

Fitted carpet is stretched over gripper rods and held under tension, which keeps it flat for years. Loose lay sits on the floor and moves, and it is only suitable for small areas or temporary use.

Does carpet need an expansion allowance?

It needs a small excess for trimming rather than expansion — usually 50 to 100 mm all round. Cutting exactly to size leaves nothing to work with when the room turns out not to be square.

How long does carpet last?

It varies enormously with fibre, pile density and traffic. Density matters more than pile height — a dense short pile outlasts a deep sparse one in a hallway by a wide margin.

Should the underlay match the carpet?

It should match the traffic rather than the carpet. Too soft an underlay under a heavy-traffic carpet lets the backing flex and fail early, which shortens the carpet's life rather than extending it.

Can carpet be laid over existing flooring?

Over a sound, flat, dry subfloor, generally yes. Over old carpet, no — the layers move independently and the top one wears through at every seam and edge.
