Floor and cube utilisation are far apart, which means height is the unused resource rather than floor. Racking usually solves that far more cheaply than a bigger building.

How the Cube Utilization Calculator works

Floor utilisation and cube utilisation are different numbers and only one of them reflects what you are paying for. A warehouse can read 80% full across the floor while using a quarter of the volume inside its walls, because nothing is stacked near the clear height. Rent is charged on the footprint regardless, so the unused height is money already spent.

Frequently asked questions

What is cube utilization?

The share of your available volume that is actually occupied: occupied floor area times average stack height, divided by total floor area times clear height. It is the honest measure of a warehouse's capacity, where floor utilisation only measures its outline.

What is a good cube utilization percentage?

Most operations land between 20% and 30%, and above 40% is genuinely well used. It never approaches 100% because aisles, pick faces, fire clearances and the gap between the top of the racking and the roof are all unusable by design.

Why is my floor utilization so much higher than my cube?

Because goods are not stacked to the available height. That is often correct — light or fragile stock cannot be stacked, and some picks need floor access — but where it is not, the fix is racking rather than a bigger building.

Should I measure to the roof or to the lowest obstruction?

To the lowest obstruction, which is the clear height: sprinkler heads, lighting, ducting and beams all cap what you can store under. Measuring to the roof apex flatters the total and makes utilisation look worse than it is.
