An image has no DPI until you decide how big to print it
A digital image is a grid of pixels. It has a pixel count and nothing else. Dots per inch only exists once you decide what physical size those pixels will occupy, and it is simply the pixel count divided by that size.
So the DPI field in a file's metadata is not a property of the image. It is a note about an intended print size, and changing it without resampling changes the intended size rather than the detail. A 3000 pixel image tagged at 72 DPI and the same image tagged at 300 DPI contain identical information.
This is the misunderstanding behind most print complaints. Someone is told their image is 72 DPI and needs to be 300, changes the number in the metadata, and sends the same file back. Nothing has improved because nothing was added.
The numbers that matter for each use
Three hundred DPI is the standard for photographic prints and anything held at reading distance, roughly 30 to 40 centimetres. It corresponds approximately to the limit of what the eye resolves at that distance.
One hundred and fifty DPI is adequate for posters and large format viewed from a metre or more. Billboards are routinely produced at 20 DPI or less, which looks like nothing at arm's length and is perfectly sharp from a passing car.
The general rule is that required resolution falls with viewing distance. Insisting on 300 DPI for a two metre banner produces an enormous file for no visible benefit and frequently exceeds what the printer's RIP will handle comfortably.
When the two figures disagree
Calculating DPI horizontally and vertically gives two numbers, and if they differ the image's aspect ratio does not match the print size.
That means something has to give: the image is cropped, stretched, or printed with white space. Deciding which before sending to print is considerably better than discovering it when the proof arrives.
The common case is a 3:2 camera image being printed at 8 by 10 inches, which is 4:5. Something is coming off the long edge, and if the composition puts important content near it, that matters. Checking the ratio at the point the print size is chosen takes seconds.
Adding pixels that were never captured
Upscaling interpolates new pixels from existing ones. Traditional methods, bicubic and similar, produce a larger image that is softer, because no detail was added.
Machine learning upscalers do better and are genuinely useful, particularly on subjects with predictable structure. They also invent detail, which is fine for a decorative print and problematic for anything where accuracy matters: product photography, technical illustration, anything legal or medical.
The practical guidance is that modest upscaling of perhaps 150% to 200% is usually acceptable, and beyond that the result depends heavily on the source and the subject. Testing on a small section at full print size is quicker than arguing about it.
What the printer actually does with your file
An inkjet quoting 4800 by 1200 DPI is describing ink droplet placement, not the resolution your image needs. Printers use many small droplets to simulate one continuous-tone pixel, so their internal figure is far higher than the image resolution required.
Which is why sending a 4800 DPI image accomplishes nothing except a very large file. The image resolution the printer wants is typically 300 DPI regardless of what the specification sheet claims.
The exception is line art and text, which benefits from higher resolution because edges are the whole content. Bitmap line art at 600 to 1200 DPI prints noticeably crisper than at 300, whereas a photograph does not.

What DPI do I need for printing?
300 for photographic prints held at reading distance, 150 for posters and large format, and considerably less for anything viewed from across a room. The requirement falls with viewing distance.
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
DPI describes ink dots a printer lays per inch; PPI describes pixels per inch in an image or on a display. They are used interchangeably almost everywhere and the distinction only matters when a printer quotes a native DPI far above what your file needs.
Can I increase the DPI of an image?
Only by printing it smaller, or by interpolating pixels that were never captured. Changing the DPI field in metadata without resampling changes the print size, not the detail.
Why do my horizontal and vertical DPI differ?
Because the image aspect ratio does not match the print size. Something will be cropped or stretched, deciding which before printing is better than discovering it afterwards.
