Angle of view is what a focal length actually means. The millimetre figure on a lens is a physical measurement that only translates to a view once you know the sensor behind it — 35mm is a moderate wide angle on full frame and a normal lens on APS-C. The frame width row answers the practical question directly: how much of a wall, a group or a table will fit from where you are standing. If it comes up short, either step back or go wider, and stepping back changes perspective while going wider does not. Angle of view is fixed by geometry; the impression of compression or exaggeration comes from where you stand, not from the lens.

What angle of view does a 50mm lens give?
About 39.6° horizontally and 46.8° diagonally on full frame. On an APS-C body the same lens covers roughly 27° horizontally, which is why it frames like a 75mm.
What counts as a wide-angle lens?
Conventionally anything wider than about 60° horizontally, which on full frame means 35mm and below. The number that matters is the angle, not the millimetres — the same focal length is wide on one sensor and normal on another.
How far back do I need to stand to fit something in frame?
Enter the focal length and read the frame width row at a few distances. If you cannot get far enough back, a wider lens covers the same width from closer — but it also changes the perspective, which stepping back does not.
Does a longer lens compress perspective?
No. Perspective depends only on where you stand. A long lens looks compressed because it is normally used from further away; crop a wide-angle frame taken from the same spot and the perspective is identical.
Is the angle of view the same in both directions?
No, it follows the frame shape. A 3:2 sensor gives a wider horizontal angle than vertical, and the diagonal figure — which manufacturers usually quote — is larger than either.
