The hyperfocal distance is the closest point you can focus on while keeping infinity acceptably sharp. Focus there and the near limit falls at roughly half that distance, which is the largest total depth of field any focus point can give at those settings. It is a landscape technique above all. Focusing on the horizon wastes the entire near half of the available depth, because nothing useful sits beyond infinity. One caution: hyperfocal focusing accepts blur right at infinity, by design. If a distant mountain or a star field is the subject, focus on it directly instead — the standard is calibrated for a print viewed at arm's length, not for pixel-level inspection.

What is the hyperfocal distance?

The focus distance at which the far limit of depth of field just reaches infinity. Focus there and everything from about half that distance outwards is acceptably sharp — the maximum depth any focus point can give at that focal length and aperture.

Why not just focus on infinity for landscapes?

Because it wastes the near half of your depth of field on empty space beyond the horizon. Focusing at the hyperfocal distance instead pulls the sharp zone forward to start at half that distance, with no loss at the far end.

Is hyperfocal focusing ever a bad idea?

Yes, when the distant detail is the subject. The technique accepts a small amount of blur right at infinity by design, calibrated for a print at normal viewing distance. For astrophotography or a distant peak examined at full resolution, focus on it directly.

How do I set the hyperfocal distance without a distance scale?

Focus on something you can estimate at roughly that distance and check the near and far limits look right in magnified live view. Modern lenses with focus-by-wire have unreliable distance scales, so the check matters more than the scale does.

Does the hyperfocal distance change with aperture?

Considerably. It falls as you stop down — roughly with the square root of the f-number — which is why landscape shooters work at f/8 to f/11 rather than wide open.
