Kilogram-force is the weight of a kilogram in standard gravity — 9.80665 N by definition. It is a force rather than a mass, which is the distinction that makes 'kg' on a bathroom scale technically a mass being inferred from a force measurement. Every factor in this family is exact by international agreement rather than measured, so the only rounding is in the display.
How the Force Converter works
Force across newtons, kilonewtons, kilogram-force, pound-force and dynes. Kilogram-force is the weight of a kilogram in standard gravity, which is the distinction that trips up bathroom scales.

Newton's second law, and what a newton is
Force equals mass times acceleration. A newton is exactly the force that accelerates one kilogram at one metre per second squared — a definition rather than a measurement.
It is roughly the weight of a small apple, which is a pleasing coincidence given the story. That also makes it a small unit, which is why kilonewtons appear in any structural context.
Kilogram-force is the weight of a kilogram under standard gravity, 9.80665 newtons exactly. It is a force despite the name, and it is why the distinction between mass and weight has to be tracked carefully.
Standard gravity is a convention
The value 9.80665 m/s² is a defined conventional figure, close to the average at sea level. Actual gravity varies from about 9.78 at the equator to 9.83 at the poles — a 0.5% spread.
The variation comes from the Earth's rotation and its equatorial bulge. It is enough to matter for precision weighing, which is why laboratory balances are calibrated locally.
It also means a bathroom scale calibrated in one place reads slightly differently in another. The mass has not changed; the force being measured has, by a fraction of a percent.
Forces in impacts and in climbing
Decelerating an 80 kg body from 50 km/h in a fraction of a second requires thousands of newtons. Crumple zones and airbags work by extending the deceleration time, which reduces the peak force proportionally.
That is the whole principle: impulse is force times time, and for a given change in momentum a longer time means a smaller force. Everything about crash safety follows from it.
Climbing equipment is rated in kilonewtons for the same reason. A rope rated at 22 kN holds far more than any static load a climber applies, because the design case is a fall arrest — a large force over a very short time.

Frequently asked questions
How many newtons in a kilogram-force?
Exactly 9.80665, which is standard gravity by definition. It is the force gravity exerts on a one-kilogram mass at that acceleration.
What is the difference between kg and kgf?
A kilogram is a mass; kilogram-force is the weight of that mass under standard gravity. A bathroom scale measures force and reports mass, which works because gravity barely varies on Earth.
How do I convert newtons to pounds-force?
Divide by 4.4482. One thousand newtons is about 225 pounds-force.
What is a newton?
The force that accelerates one kilogram at one metre per second squared. It is roughly the weight of a small apple, which is a pleasing coincidence given the story.
What is a dyne?
A CGS unit — the force accelerating one gram at one centimetre per second squared, which is a hundred-thousandth of a newton. It survives mainly in older physics literature.
Does weight change on the Moon?
Weight does; mass does not. A 70 kg person has 70 kg of mass everywhere and weighs about 686 N on Earth and 114 N on the Moon.
What is the relationship between force, mass and acceleration?
Newton's second law: force equals mass times acceleration. A newton is exactly the force that accelerates one kilogram at one metre per second squared.
How much force does a seatbelt exert in a crash?
Very large — decelerating an 80 kg body from 50 km/h in a fraction of a second requires thousands of newtons. Crumple zones exist to extend that time and so reduce the force.
What is a moment versus a force?
A moment is a force times a perpendicular distance — a turning effect. Same force, longer lever, larger moment, which is the whole principle of a spanner.
Why is standard gravity 9.80665?
It is a defined conventional value, close to the average at sea level. Actual gravity varies from about 9.78 at the equator to 9.83 at the poles.
What is a kilonewton in practical terms?
About 102 kilograms-force, or the weight of a large person. Climbing equipment is rated in kilonewtons, and a rope rated at 22 kN holds far more than any static load a climber applies.
How is force measured?
With a load cell, which converts deformation into an electrical signal. Spring scales do the same thing mechanically, which is why they need recalibrating as the spring ages.
