Torque and energy have the same dimensions and are not the same quantity — a newton metre of torque is a twisting force and a joule is work done. They are kept notationally distinct for exactly that reason, and pound-feet for torque is conventionally written that way round while foot-pounds is used for energy.

Same dimensions, different quantity

Torque is force times perpendicular distance, and energy is force times distance moved. Both come out as newton metres dimensionally, and they are not the same physical quantity.

The units are kept notationally distinct for exactly that reason — newton metres for torque, joules for energy — so that one is never added to the other. Convention also puts pound-feet on torque and foot-pounds on energy.

The deeper reason is that torque is a vector quantity with an axis, while energy is a scalar. The dimensional coincidence hides a genuine difference in what the quantities describe.

Why torque settings depend on friction

Most of the torque applied to a fastener goes into overcoming friction — in the threads and under the head — rather than into stretching the bolt. Only the stretch produces clamping force.

So lubrication changes everything. A lubricated thread reaches the same clamping force at noticeably lower torque, which means applying a dry-thread figure to a lubricated bolt over-tightens it, sometimes past failure.

That is why torque-angle tightening exists: tighten to a low seating torque, then turn a specified further angle. It controls bolt stretch directly rather than inferring it through a friction-dependent proxy.

Torque, power and gearing

Power is torque times angular velocity. An engine's peak torque and peak power occur at different speeds, which is why both figures are quoted and why neither alone describes how a car feels.

Gearing multiplies torque at the cost of speed. That is why a high-revving low-torque engine with short gearing can out-accelerate a torquey one with tall gearing — what reaches the wheels is what matters.

Torque-to-yield fasteners are a related idea in the opposite direction: tightened deliberately past their elastic limit so they stretch permanently. Those bolts are single-use, and reusing one risks failure at a much lower load.
