How the Freight Class Calculator works
LTL freight pricing runs on class, and class is driven mainly by density, pounds per cubic foot. Dense freight is cheap to move relative to the space it takes; light bulky freight is expensive. Getting the class wrong means a reclassification charge on the invoice.

How the number is derived
Freight class under the US NMFC system is driven primarily by density: pounds per cubic foot. Density = weight ÷ (length × width × height ÷ 1,728), with dimensions in inches.
The scale runs from class 50 for the densest freight to class 500 for the lightest, and the rate rises steeply as the class number does. Stowability, handling and liability can override the density-derived class for particular commodities, but density decides it for most general merchandise.
Numbers on it
A pallet 48 × 40 × 48 inches weighing 600 lb. Volume is 92,160 cubic inches, or 53.3 cubic feet. Density is 600 ÷ 53.3 = 11.25 lb per cubic foot.
That falls in the 10.5 to 12 band, giving class 92.5.
Now stack the same 600 lb into a 48 × 40 × 30 pallet: 33.3 cubic feet, density 18 lb per cubic foot, class 70. On a typical lane that reclassification is worth 15% to 25% of the linehaul, from nothing more than packing the pallet shorter.
What it does not tell you
Density has to be calculated on the shipping dimensions, including the pallet and any overhang, not on the product's dimensions. A pallet that is 46 inches of product on a 5-inch pallet base measures 51 inches, and rounding down is how reclassification charges start.
Carriers reweigh and remeasure, and a class declared too low produces a corrected invoice with an adjustment fee on top. The correction is generally not negotiable after the fact, which makes accurate declaration considerably cheaper than optimistic declaration.
What follows from it
Measure a real loaded pallet rather than calculating from the product spec. Shrink wrap, pallet height, overhang and the way items actually stack all change the number, usually upward.
Then look at whether the packing can be changed. Density is the one input under your control, and the class bands are wide enough that a modest improvement often crosses a boundary and drops the rate a whole step.
The move toward NMFC's density-only structure
The classification system has been progressively simplified, with the 2025 restructuring moving a large number of commodities to a standard density scale rather than commodity-specific classes. The practical effect is that density matters more than it used to and the commodity code matters less.
For shippers, that makes the density calculation the whole exercise for most general freight, and it makes packing efficiency directly and predictably worth money. It also removes some of the ambiguity that used to make classification disputes common.
The items that still carry non-density classes are those with genuine handling or liability characteristics: hazardous goods, fragile items, awkward shapes that cannot be stacked. If your freight is none of those, the density figure is very likely the answer, and it is one you can calculate yourself before asking a carrier.
Get the classification confirmed in writing by the carrier rather than assuming it from the density table. Carriers will quote a class against a described commodity, and having that on record turns a later reclassification into a dispute you can win.
It also surfaces the cases where a commodity-specific class overrides density, which is the situation the density calculation cannot detect on its own.
