Duty rates and thresholds change with trade policy. These are planning estimates — the entry filed with customs decides the actual charge.

Total charges at the border

$861.00

17.2% of the goods value

Value for duty (FOB)$5,000.00
Duty at 5.0%$250.00
GST at 10%$611.00
Total to customs$861.00
Landed value including charges$6,721.00

Customs value is FOB, but GST is calculated on the value of the taxable importation — customs value plus freight, insurance and duty. Below A$1,000 the platform generally collects GST at the point of sale instead.

How the Import Duty Calculator Australia works

Australia values goods FOB for customs duty but calculates GST on the value of the taxable importation — customs value plus freight, insurance and duty. That mixed basis catches importers out, because the GST base is wider than the duty base.

Not financial advice. Marketplace fees change, and they vary by country, plan and seller status. Every rate here is an editable default, not a quoted price — check the platform's current fee schedule before you price a product against it. This is not tax or business advice.

Frequently asked questions

How is Australian GST on imports calculated?

On the value of the taxable importation: customs value plus international transport and insurance plus any duty. So while duty uses FOB, GST effectively uses a CIF-plus-duty figure — the two use different bases in the same transaction.

What is the A$1,000 threshold?

Consignments valued at or below A$1,000 generally clear without duty and without GST collected at the border. Instead, GST is collected at the point of sale by the overseas supplier or marketplace where they are registered.

Can I claim the GST back?

If GST registered and importing for business, yes, as an input tax credit. The deferred GST scheme also lets eligible importers defer payment to their activity statement rather than paying at the border.

What is an import declaration?

Required for consignments over A$1,000, lodged through the Integrated Cargo System. It carries a processing charge, and most importers use a broker to file it.
