Below the 2.38× break-even, so this spend loses money at these rates. Instagram placements typically cost more per thousand than Feed and click through less, but attract higher order values in visual categories. Judge it on cost per acquisition, not CPM.
How the Instagram Ads Cost Calculator works
Instagram placements typically cost more per thousand than Feed and click through less, while attracting higher order values in visual categories. That combination means CPM comparisons mislead, the only fair test is cost per acquisition.

How it is calculated
Instagram inventory is bought through the same auction as Facebook and priced the same way, CPM for impressions, with cost per click and cost per acquisition derived from engagement and conversion rates.
Cost differences between the two placements come from audience composition and competition rather than from a different pricing mechanism.
CPA = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1000 × conversion rate), the same chain as any impression-bought channel.
Numbers on it
An Instagram feed placement at a $14 CPM with a 0.9% click-through rate gives a $1.56 CPC. At a 2.8% conversion rate that is a $55.71 cost per acquisition.
Against $31.90 of contribution per order, that loses $23.81 per customer, the campaign does not work at those rates.
Improve click-through to 1.6% through better creative and the CPC falls to $0.88; improve conversion to 4% with a better landing experience and CPA falls to $21.88, leaving $10.02 of profit.
Neither improvement touched the CPM, which is the point: the channel's viability was decided by the two terms the advertiser controls.
What it does not tell you
Instagram's audience skews younger and more visually driven, so the same creative performs very differently here than on other placements. Reusing a Facebook creative unchanged is the most common reason the placement underperforms.
Stories and Reels also have different economics from feed, usually cheaper CPMs and lower click-through, so a blended Instagram figure describes a mixture rather than a channel.
What follows from it
Break results out by placement rather than by platform. Feed, Stories and Reels behave differently enough that a combined number hides which is working.
Then produce creative for the format rather than adapting it. Vertical video made for Reels outperforms a cropped horizontal ad by margins large enough to change whether the placement is viable.
Why format-native creative matters more here than anywhere
The channel's users are habituated to a specific visual language, and content that looks like an advertisement in an environment of native content is skipped before it is read.
Creative that matches the format: vertical, fast, sound-designed, front-loaded, routinely achieves several times the click-through rate of a repurposed asset, which through the CPC identity means several times cheaper traffic.
That is a production cost rather than a media cost, and it is the one most accounts underfund. Spending 10% of the media budget on creative made for the placement usually returns more than spending the same amount on additional impressions, and the difference compounds because better engagement also lowers the auction price.
There is also this: creator partnerships and paid amplification of organic posts frequently outperform conventional ad creative on this placement, because the content already has social proof attached.
Whitelisting a creator's post and running it as an advertisement combines native appearance with paid distribution, and it consistently produces better engagement rates than brand-produced assets in the same placement.
The arrangement costs a usage fee to the creator and typically returns it several times over in reduced cost per click.
Placement drives cost more than most other settings, and automatic placements will spend wherever it is cheapest rather than wherever it works. Feed, Stories, Reels and Explore have materially different costs per thousand impressions and different conversion behaviour. Reporting by placement rather than in aggregate frequently shows one placement carrying the campaign and another consuming budget quietly.

Not financial advice. Marketplace fees change, and they vary by country, plan and seller status. Every rate here is an editable default, not a quoted price, check the platform's current fee schedule before you price a product against it. This is not tax or business advice.
Frequently asked questions
How much do Instagram ads cost?
Typically a higher CPM than Facebook Feed for the same targeting, varying widely by country and season. Stories and Reels price differently again.
Is Instagram better than Facebook for ecommerce?
For visual, considered and fashion-led products, often. For price-driven or utility products, usually not. The audience skews younger and more discovery-oriented.
Should I separate Instagram placements?
Splitting placements gives control and costs efficiency, because the algorithm optimises better with pooled data. Split only when you have enough volume to support it.
Do Reels and Stories need different creative?
Yes. Vertical, sound-on, fast openings. Reusing a Feed asset in Stories reliably underperforms, and it is the most common reason placement-level results look bad.
