Pace is a reciprocal of speed, which is why paces cannot be averaged the way speeds can. Running one kilometre at 4:00 and another at 6:00 gives an average pace of 5:00 only because the distances are equal — over equal times, the average speed would be the mean and the average pace would not. Holding an even pace is also harder than it sounds: nearly every distance record has been set on a slight negative split.

Pace is a reciprocal and cannot be averaged

Speed is distance over time; pace is time over distance. They carry the same information and they do not behave the same way under averaging.

Running one kilometre at 4:00 and another at 6:00 gives an average pace of 5:00 only because the distances are equal. Over equal times — say twenty minutes at each pace — the average speed is the mean and the average pace is not.

The general rule is that averaging pace over equal distances is fine and averaging it over equal times is not. It is the same distinction that makes the harmonic mean the correct average for rates over a fixed distance.

Why even pacing is harder than it sounds

Nearly every runner starts faster than intended. Adrenaline, fresh legs and the crowd around them all push the first kilometre below target, and the cost is paid in the final third.

The cost is asymmetric. Seconds gained early are repaid with interest late, because going out too fast raises lactate and depletes glycogen faster than the pace alone would suggest.

Which is why nearly every distance record has been set on a slight negative split, and why the runners passing you in the last five kilometres started slower than you did. It is the single most reliable pacing observation in distance running.

What slows a pace that is not fitness

Heat diverts blood to the skin for cooling, leaving less for working muscle. A hot day can slow marathon pace by several percent, and it is a physiological constraint rather than a failure of effort.

Wind costs more than it returns. A headwind out and a tailwind back leaves a net loss, because the time spent fighting the wind exceeds the time assisted by it — the same reciprocal effect that makes pace hard to average.

Treadmills run slightly easier, with no air resistance and no surface variation. A 1% incline is the conventional adjustment, and it is an approximation rather than an equivalence.

How do I calculate running pace?

Divide the time by the distance. Fifty minutes for 10 km is 300 seconds per kilometre, which is 5:00 per km.

How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?

Multiply by 1.609. A 5:00 per km pace is 8:03 per mile, and going the other way divide by the same factor.

Why can't I average two paces?

What is heart rate zone training?

Structuring training by heart rate ranges rather than pace, which self-corrects for heat, hills and fatigue. It needs a reasonably accurate maximum heart rate to be meaningful.
