How the Shipping Cost Per Pound Calculator works
Cost per pound normalises quotes that are otherwise hard to compare: different weight bands, different surcharge structures, different minimums. It is the fastest way to see which carrier is genuinely cheaper for the parcels you actually send.

How it is calculated
Shipping cost per pound is total shipping cost ÷ billable weight. It is a comparison tool rather than a pricing input, useful for judging services, carriers and packaging changes against each other.
The per-pound figure falls sharply as weight rises, because a large part of the rate is a fixed cost of handling a parcel at all. That non-linearity is the reason consolidating shipments is usually cheaper than sending them separately.
Numbers on it
The 4 lb parcel at $9.85 is $2.46 a pound. A 10 lb parcel to the same zone at about $14.60 is $1.46 a pound. A 30 lb parcel at $28 is $0.93.
Now LTL freight: the 600 lb pallet at $646.80 is $1.08 a pound, worse than a 30 lb parcel, because the accessorials on that shipment were 39% of the total.
Strip the residential and liftgate charges by delivering to a commercial dock and the pallet costs $396.80, or $0.66 a pound. The same freight, and a per-pound figure that moves by 39% based on where it is delivered.
What it does not tell you
Per-pound comparisons across weight bands are meaningless because of the fixed component. A parcel service looking expensive per pound at 2 lb is not being outperformed by a freight service at 600 lb; they are different products for different shipments.
It also ignores dimensional weight entirely. A light bulky parcel has a high cost per actual pound and a normal cost per billable pound, and the first number will send you chasing the wrong problem.
What follows from it
Use it to compare like with like: the same weight band, the same zone, the same service, different carriers or different packaging. Within those constraints it is a clean comparison.
Then use it to find the crossover points between services, where parcel stops beating freight, where ground stops beating a regional carrier. Those crossovers are worth knowing precisely, because shipments near them get routed by habit rather than by cost.
The fixed cost of a parcel
Roughly $3 to $5 of any parcel rate is the cost of the parcel existing at all: the scan events, the label, the sortation passes, the final delivery stop. That component does not change with weight, which is why the per-pound figure falls so steeply.
The practical consequence is that consolidation almost always wins. Two 5 lb parcels cost more than one 10 lb parcel by roughly that fixed amount, which is why split shipments are expensive and why encouraging customers to order everything at once has a real payoff.
It also explains the economics of the lightest shipments. A 4 oz item costs nearly as much to ship as a 2 lb one on most services, which is why letter and flat-rate envelope services exist and why very light products should be designed to fit them. The saving there is not marginal. It is often half the parcel cost.
One caution when using the measure across carriers: the fixed component differs between them, so the crossover point shifts. A carrier with a low fixed cost and a high per-pound rate wins on light parcels and loses on heavy ones, and a single per-pound comparison at one weight will pick the wrong one for half your shipments.
Comparing at three weights: light, typical and heavy, takes minutes and produces a routing rule rather than a carrier choice, which is worth considerably more.
