Amazon Closing Fee Calculator
A flat fee that hurts cheap media most.
A flat fee that hurts cheap media most. Media categories carry a flat closing fee on top of the referral fee.
Amazon revises fee schedules at least annually and adds new surcharges more often. These defaults are a starting point, the figures in your own fee preview are the ones that describe your ASINs.
Variable closing fee
$1.80
6% of a $29.99 item
The closing fee is flat, so it hurts cheap media most, 6% of this item but 36% of a $5 one. Media categories are where low-priced listings stop working, and this fee is usually why.
How the Amazon Closing Fee Calculator works
Media categories carry a flat closing fee on top of the referral fee. Because it is flat, it takes a large share of a cheap item and a trivial share of an expensive one, which is why low-priced listings stop working in books and media long before they do elsewhere.

How the figure is built
The variable closing fee is a flat per-item charge applied to media categories: books, music, video, DVD, software and video games, on top of the referral fee.
Total fees on a media item = (price × referral rate) + closing fee + fulfilment fee if FBA.
It is a fixed amount rather than a percentage, so like the fulfilment fee it consumes a larger share of a cheap item than an expensive one.
The numbers, worked through
A book selling at $12.99 with a 15% referral fee and a $1.80 closing fee: $1.95 + $1.80 = $3.75 of Amazon fees before fulfilment, or 28.9% of the price.
The same book at $29.99: $4.50 + $1.80 = $6.30, or 21%, the flat fee's share halves as the price doubles.
Add FBA fulfilment at around $3.50 for a book and the $12.99 item pays $7.25 in total fees, 55.8% of the selling price, before any cost of goods.
That arithmetic is why used book selling at low price points is a volume business with very thin unit economics, and why media sellers concentrate on higher-value items.
Where the figure deceives
The closing fee applies to media categories regardless of the format or the seller, and it is easy to omit from a model built on a general referral-plus-fulfilment structure.
Media categories also have their own condition grading and buyer expectations, so returns and negative feedback risk behave differently from general merchandise.
Acting on it
Include the closing fee in any media product model from the start. On a cheap item it can exceed the referral fee and it changes the viable price floor materially.
Then set a minimum price below which you will not list. For most media sellers that floor is considerably higher than instinct suggests once the closing and fulfilment fees are counted.
Why media economics push toward FBM and toward value
With a flat closing fee and a flat fulfilment fee stacked on a percentage referral, cheap media items on FBA are frequently unprofitable at any realistic cost of goods.
That pushes media sellers in two directions: fulfilling themselves, where the fulfilment fee is replaced by media-rate postage that is often much cheaper, and moving upmarket to items where the flat fees are a small share.
The sellers who do well in media typically do both, self-fulfilling low-value stock at media postage rates and reserving FBA for higher-value or faster-moving items. Applying a single fulfilment strategy across a media catalogue leaves money on the table in one direction or the other, and the arithmetic that shows which is straightforward once the closing fee is in the model.
Condition matters more than in general merchandise, and a listing graded optimistically generates returns and negative feedback that cost far more than the price difference between grades. Grading conservatively is cheaper than defending a dispute.
It is worth checking whether a product has been categorised as media when it is not. Accessories, cases and equipment sometimes land in a media category through a listing error, and the closing fee is charged on every sale until it is corrected.

Frequently asked questions
What is the variable closing fee?
A fixed per-item charge applied to media categories: books, music, video, DVD, software and video games, in addition to the referral fee.
Which categories does it apply to?
Media only. Most other categories carry the referral fee alone, though some have their own additional per-unit surcharges.
Why does it matter so much on cheap items?
Because it does not scale. On a $30 book it is a small percentage; on a $4 one it is a large fraction of the price, and combined with the referral fee it can leave nothing.
How do sellers work around it?
By avoiding very low price points in media, bundling to raise average order value, or selling used copies where condition supports a higher price. There is no way to avoid the fee itself.
