How the Etsy Fee Calculator Canada works

Canadian sellers deal with fees quoted partly in US dollars, a domestic processing rate, and sales tax that varies by province between GST alone and a combined HST. The currency conversion fee is the one most often missed.

What the formula says

A Canadian Etsy shop pays the CAD 0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing of 3% plus CAD 0.25, and a 0.4% regulatory operating fee, the highest regulatory rate of the major Etsy markets. GST or HST applies to Etsy's fees depending on your province and your registration status.

Because Canada's sales tax is split between federal GST and provincial components, the rate applied to your Etsy fees depends on where your shop is registered rather than where the buyer is. That is the opposite of how sales tax on the order itself works, and holding both in mind at once is the awkward part.

The numbers, worked through

A CAD 45 item with CAD 12 shipping is a CAD 57 order. Listing CAD 0.20. Transaction 6.5% = CAD 3.71. Processing 3% plus 0.25 = CAD 1.96. Regulatory 0.4% = CAD 0.23. Total CAD 6.10, or 10.7% of gross.

In Ontario, 13% HST on those fees adds CAD 0.79, taking the total to CAD 6.89 and the effective rate to 12.1%. In Alberta, where only the 5% GST applies, it adds CAD 0.31 for a total of CAD 6.41 and 11.2%.

The provincial difference is 0.9 percentage points of gross: small per order and, across a shop doing CAD 60,000 a year, roughly CAD 540.

What the number leaves out

Canadian sellers shipping to the United States face the additional question of whether the buyer is charged duty or import processing on delivery. Under the current de minimis arrangements most small parcels clear without charge, but that position has been subject to policy change and is worth verifying rather than assuming.

Domestic shipping is also the dominant cost for Canadian sellers in a way it is not elsewhere. Canada Post rates over long distances frequently exceed the Etsy fee by a multiple, which means shipping policy affects Canadian shop profitability far more than fee optimisation does.

Turning it into a decision

Register for GST or HST once you approach the small supplier threshold, and give Etsy the number. Registration lets you claim input tax credits on the GST or HST charged on your Etsy fees and on your materials, which for a shop with meaningful supply costs is a direct saving rather than a paperwork exercise.

Then set shipping by zone rather than flat. A flat national shipping rate on a country the size of Canada either overcharges nearby buyers, which costs conversion, or undercharges distant ones, which costs margin. Etsy's calculated shipping removes the guesswork and is worth the setup time.

Why shipping dominates Canadian shop economics

Canada Post rates across long distances are high relative to the item values most Etsy shops trade at, and the country's geography means a meaningful share of domestic orders travel a very long way. A flat national shipping rate either overcharges buyers in the next city, which costs conversion, or undercharges buyers across the country, which costs margin on exactly the orders that were hardest to win.

Etsy's calculated shipping solves this properly by quoting the real rate to each buyer's postcode. It takes an afternoon to configure package dimensions and weights per listing, and it removes an entire category of quiet loss. Shops that skip it and use flat rates typically lose several dollars on every long-distance order.

For cross-border sales into the United States, which for many Canadian shops is the larger market, the arithmetic is different again, and the currency conversion on the payout is frequently a larger cost than the shipping differential. Listing in USD and holding a USD account removes most of it.

Where to go next

Not financial advice. Marketplace fees change, and they vary by country, plan and seller status. Every rate here is an editable default, not a quoted price, check the platform's current fee schedule before you price a product against it. This is not tax or business advice.

Frequently asked questions

What are Etsy's fees for Canadian sellers?

$0.20 USD per listing, 6.5% transaction fee, and 3% plus CA$0.25 payment processing. If your shop lists in USD but you bank in CAD, a currency conversion fee of about 2.5% applies on top.

Does Etsy charge GST or HST on fees?

Etsy applies Canadian sales tax to seller fees based on your province. Registered sellers can generally claim input tax credits on those amounts, keep the monthly statements as documentation.

Should I list in CAD or USD?

Listing in the currency you bank in avoids the roughly 2.5% conversion fee. Listing in USD can improve visibility with US buyers, who are the largest group on Etsy. Run both through this calculator before deciding, the conversion fee is often larger than the uplift.

Do I charge GST/HST on my Etsy sales?

Only if you are registered, which is required above the small supplier threshold and optional below it. Etsy collects and remits tax on some transactions automatically depending on the buyer's location, so check what has already been handled before filing.
