How the Etsy Fee Calculator Germany works

German sellers face the European processing rate of 4% plus €0.30, a regulatory operating fee, and 19% VAT on Etsy's fees unless a VAT ID has been supplied. Kleinunternehmer status changes the sales-side VAT picture but not what Etsy charges you.

Also known as: Etsy Gebühren Rechner · Etsy fees German sellers · Etsy Umsatzsteuer fees

Setting it out

A German Etsy shop pays a €0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing of 4% plus €0.30, and a 0.32% regulatory operating fee. Both the processing percentage and the fixed element are higher than the US equivalents, so German fee estimates built from American guidance understate the cost noticeably.

VAT at 19% applies to Etsy's fees unless you have provided a valid VAT identification number, in which case the reverse charge applies and Etsy supplies the fees without VAT.

A concrete case

A €42 item with €4.90 shipping is a €46.90 order. Listing €0.20. Transaction 6.5% = €3.05. Processing 4% plus €0.30 = €2.18. Regulatory 0.32% = €0.15. Total €5.58, or 11.9% of gross.

Without a VAT ID on file, 19% VAT on those fees adds €1.06, taking the total to €6.64 and the effective rate to 14.2%. That is a 2.3-point difference driven entirely by whether a number is entered in the shop settings.

Across a shop doing €40,000 a year, that omission costs about €920.

What the number hides

German sellers face compliance obligations that no fee schedule captures. Packaging registration under the Verpackungsgesetz is mandatory for anyone shipping packaged goods to German consumers, carries an annual cost, and is enforced. The Kleinunternehmerregelung, the small business VAT exemption, changes the whole VAT picture and has its own thresholds.

Selling from Germany to other EU countries brings the distance selling thresholds and the One Stop Shop into play once cross-border sales pass the EU-wide limit. Below it you charge German VAT; above it you charge the destination country's rate, and the arithmetic on every order changes.

Where to go from here

Enter your VAT ID in Etsy's settings if you have one. It is the single highest-return administrative action available, worth over two percentage points of gross for a German shop, and it takes minutes.

Then check your position against the Kleinunternehmerregelung and the OSS thresholds rather than assuming. Both have specific turnover limits, both change the VAT treatment of every sale when crossed, and both are far easier to handle if you see them coming than if you discover them in an audit. Watching rolling twelve-month turnover rather than the calendar year is what gives you the warning.

Compliance costs a fee calculator does not show

German sellers carry obligations that no fee schedule captures and that carry real cost. Packaging registration under the Verpackungsgesetz is mandatory for anyone shipping packaged goods to German consumers, requires registration with the central authority and a licensing agreement with a dual system, and is actively enforced with fines.

The Kleinunternehmerregelung, the small business VAT exemption, changes the entire VAT picture below its turnover threshold. Below it you do not charge VAT and cannot reclaim it; above it both change on the same day. Watching rolling turnover rather than the calendar year is what gives you warning, because the threshold applies on a forward-looking basis as well as a backward one.

And once cross-border sales into other EU countries pass the union-wide distance selling threshold, you charge the destination country's VAT rate rather than the German one, usually through the One Stop Shop. That changes the arithmetic on every affected order and it happens quietly, nothing prompts you at the moment you cross it.

Not financial advice. Marketplace fees change, and they vary by country, plan and seller status. Every rate here is an editable default, not a quoted price, check the platform's current fee schedule before you price a product against it. This is not tax or business advice.

Frequently asked questions

What are Etsy's fees for German sellers?

$0.20 USD listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee, 4% plus €0.30 payment processing, and a regulatory operating fee on the order total. VAT at 19% is added to Etsy's fees unless you supply a valid VAT identification number.

What is the Regulierungsgebühr on Etsy?

The regulatory operating fee, charged as a percentage of the order total in markets including Germany to offset digital services taxes and compliance costs. It sits on top of the standard transaction fee.

How does Kleinunternehmerregelung affect Etsy selling?

Under the small business rule you do not charge VAT on your sales and cannot reclaim input VAT. It does not change the fees Etsy charges: and without a VAT ID, Etsy will apply VAT to those fees, which you then cannot reclaim.

Do I need to supply a VAT ID to Etsy?

If you have one, yes. It generally moves fee billing to the reverse charge, so Etsy bills without VAT and you account for it on your return. Without one, VAT is added to every fee.
