How the Localized Price Rounding Calculator works
Rounding a converted price down to a tidy local number is a small, permanent, one-directional margin leak. Customers never saw the converted price, so rounding up to the nearest charm point is usually free.

Why a converted price is never the final price
Convert £24.99 into euros at 1.17 and you get €29.24. Nobody charges €29.24. Every market has price endings that read as normal and endings that read as a conversion, and the second signals that no thought went into the local pricing.
The effect on trust is real if hard to measure. A price that looks calculated rather than chosen suggests a seller who has not localised anything else either, which for a customer weighing an unfamiliar foreign retailer is exactly the wrong impression.
Rounding also protects margin. Converted prices land arbitrarily, and rounding down to the nearest conventional ending gives away money for nothing. Rounding up costs a fraction of a percent in conversion and recovers considerably more in margin.
The conventions by market
The UK and US are dominated by 99 endings, with 95 appearing in some premium positioning. Round numbers signal either luxury or cheapness depending on context.
Germany uses 99 widely and is more comfortable with round numbers and with 95 than the UK. France similar. The Nordics use round numbers more readily, partly because of coinage that has removed small denominations.
Japan works in whole hundreds of yen for most consumer goods, with 980 and 1,980 endings extremely common. Australia rounds cash transactions to the nearest 5 cents since 1 and 2 cent coins were withdrawn, which makes prices ending in 99 slightly odd in cash contexts and normal online. Switzerland similar, rounding to 5 rappen.
The charm pricing evidence
Prices ending in 9 do outperform round numbers in many tested contexts, and the effect is smaller and less universal than the folklore suggests. It is strongest for value-positioned products and weakest or reversed for premium ones.
The proposed mechanism is left-digit anchoring: £19.99 is processed as roughly nineteen pounds rather than twenty, and the perceived difference is larger than one penny. That effect weakens when the left digit does not change, which is why £24.99 against £25.00 does less than £19.99 against £20.00.
Premium positioning frequently uses round numbers deliberately, because 9 endings signal discounting. A £200 product priced at £199.99 reads as being on offer, which is fine if it is and undermines the positioning if it is not.
Rounding rules that work at catalogue scale
Doing this by hand across a catalogue and several markets is impractical, so it needs a rule. A workable one: convert at the current rate, add the margin buffer, then round up to the nearest conventional ending for that market.
The rule has to specify direction. Always rounding up protects margin and can push prices past a competitive threshold. Rounding to nearest is fairer and gives away margin about half the time. Rounding up unless it crosses a round-number threshold is the compromise most catalogues settle on.
Whatever the rule, apply it consistently and document it. Catalogues where each price was rounded by judgement end up with inconsistent endings across the range, which looks careless when a customer views a category page and sees €29.99, €31.50 and €34.00 side by side.
Re-rounding when rates move
Local prices set at one exchange rate drift out of alignment as the rate moves, and at some point the rounded price no longer covers the intended margin.
The choice is between repricing frequently, which is administratively heavy and confuses customers who see prices changing, and holding prices and absorbing the movement until it becomes material.
Most sellers land on a threshold: reprice when the rate has moved beyond a set percentage, commonly 5%. That gives stability in normal conditions and a defined response to a real move. Setting the threshold in advance also prevents the more common outcome, which is noticing after a year that the German prices have been below the intended margin for eight months.

Frequently asked questions
Should I round converted prices?
Always, a price of 47.83 looks like a conversion and reads as unconsidered. What matters is which direction you round.
Which way should I round?
Up, in most cases. The customer has no reference point for the converted figure, so rounding up costs nothing in perception and adds margin on every unit.
Do charm prices work in every market?
The .99 convention is widespread but not universal, some markets prefer round numbers, and in others certain digits carry associations. Local convention beats the home-market habit.
How much does rounding cost?
Whatever the difference is, times every unit sold. It is small per unit and permanent, which is exactly the kind of leak that never gets found.
