Power goes with the cube of speed

The Concept2 relationship is watts = 2.80 divided by pace in seconds per metre, cubed. That cube is the single most counter-intuitive fact about ergometer rowing.

It means halving the split takes eight times the power. Going from a 2:00 split to a 1:00 split is not twice the work — it is eight times it, which is why elite 2 km times cluster so tightly.

It also means small gains cost disproportionately more at fast splits. Two seconds off a 1:45 split requires far more power than two seconds off a 2:15, which is why progress appears to stall as a rower improves.

Damper, drag factor and what they do not change

The monitor measures work done, not resistance. Damper setting changes how the stroke feels and what rate suits it; it does not change the relationship between power and split.

Drag factor is the more reliable setting, because it measures the actual resistance the flywheel experiences and accounts for air temperature and dust. Most coaches suggest 110 to 130 for general training.

High damper is not the same as hard training. It suits a lower stroke rate and higher force per stroke, which is a different training stimulus rather than a harder one — and it is not how boats move on water.

Where the power comes from

Legs, then back, then arms, in that sequence. The legs are by far the largest muscle group involved and they produce most of the force, which is why the drive starts with them.

Most beginners pull with the arms too early, which breaks the sequence and loses most of the available force. Correcting it produces a larger improvement than any amount of additional effort in the wrong pattern.

The erg measures power output and not boat speed, which depends on balance, technique, rigging and water conditions. A good erg score correlates with boat speed and does not determine it — which is why crews are selected on the water.

A measure of the actual resistance the flywheel experiences, which the monitor calculates. It is a more reliable setting than the damper number, since it accounts for air temperature and dust in the flywheel.

How should I set the damper?

Most coaches suggest a drag factor around 110 to 130 for general training, which is a damper setting near 3 to 5 on a clean machine. High damper is not the same as hard training.

Why does my erg score differ from on-water speed?

Because an erg has no balance, no steering, no water conditions and no boat to move. It measures power output, which correlates with boat speed and does not determine it.

What is a weight adjustment?

A correction applied in some competitions to compare lightweight and heavyweight scores, since a heavier athlete produces more power. It does not change the raw split.

How do I improve my split?
