How the Shopify App Cost Calculator works

App subscriptions are the cost that grows without anyone deciding to grow it. Each one is small enough to approve without much thought, they are billed separately from the plan, and nothing in the admin totals them. Stores routinely discover the stack costs more than the Shopify plan it sits on, and that a third of it is doing nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Shopify apps cost per month?

Individually, most sit between $10 and $50 a month. Collectively is the number that matters: a typical established store runs eight to fifteen apps, which commonly totals $200-500 a month, often more than the plan itself.

What share of revenue should apps take?

There is no published benchmark, but a useful test is whether the stack costs more than 1-2% of revenue. Above that it is worth auditing, because app spend is fixed while revenue is not, and it hurts most in a slow month.

How do I find apps I am paying for but not using?

Check the Shopify billing statement rather than the apps list; uninstalled apps occasionally keep billing, and installed-but-unused ones never announce themselves. Anything you cannot name a purpose for in one sentence is a candidate.

Do apps charge annually or monthly?

Both, and many discount an annual commitment by 15-20%. That is worth taking on apps you are certain about and worth avoiding on anything you have run for less than a few months, because the commitment outlasts the experiment.
