Contribution margin tells you whether one more order helps. Net margin tells you whether the business works. A store profitable on the first and not the second has a volume problem rather than a pricing one.

How the Shopify Profit Margin Calculator works

Per-order margin on Shopify usually looks healthier than the bank balance suggests, because the fixed costs never appear in a per-order sum. The plan, the apps and the theme are paid whether or not anything sells, so a store with good unit economics and low volume can still be losing money every month. This spreads the fixed costs across your actual order count.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good profit margin for a Shopify store?

Net margins of 10-20% are common for established stores and 20-30% is strong. Anything reported above that usually excludes either fixed costs or advertising. If your per-order margin looks like 50%, check whether the plan, apps and ad spend are in the number.

Should fixed costs be in a per-order margin?

Track it both ways. Contribution margin, before fixed costs, tells you whether selling one more unit helps. Fully loaded margin tells you whether the business works. A store profitable on the first and not the second has a volume problem, not a pricing problem.

Why is my Shopify profit lower than my margin suggests?

Usually three things: shipping charged does not cover shipping paid, returns and refunds are not netted off, and the app stack plus plan is larger than remembered. All three are invisible in a single-order calculation.

Does advertising belong in margin?

If you rely on paid traffic, yes, because it is a cost of acquiring the order rather than an optional extra. Model it as a cost per order rather than a monthly lump, so the margin reflects what each sale genuinely leaves.
