How the Shopify Transaction Fee Calculator works

Shopify charges for payments in one of two ways, and merchants routinely model only half of it. Use Shopify Payments and you pay a card rate that falls as the plan rises. Use anyone else and you pay that provider's rate plus a Shopify surcharge for the privilege, which on the entry plan is large enough to outweigh most gateway savings.

Frequently asked questions

What are Shopify's transaction fees?

With Shopify Payments, a percentage plus a flat amount per online card transaction, with the percentage falling on higher plans. With a third-party gateway, that provider's own fees plus a Shopify surcharge on the order value, which also falls with the plan.

Does Shopify charge a fee if I use PayPal or Stripe?

Shopify applies its third-party surcharge to transactions settled outside Shopify Payments, on top of whatever that provider charges. That is the fee people are surprised by, because it is charged by Shopify for a payment Shopify did not process.

How do I avoid Shopify's transaction fee?

Use Shopify Payments where it is available in your country, which removes the surcharge entirely. Where it is not available there is no way to avoid it, and the surcharge should simply be modelled as part of the cost of selling.

Do the fees apply to shipping and tax?

Card processing is charged on the total amount the customer was billed, which includes shipping and any tax collected. That is why the effective rate against the revenue you keep is always a little above the headline percentage.
