How the number is derived

An Australian shop pays the AUD 0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing of 3% plus AUD 0.25, and a 0.32% regulatory operating fee. GST at 10% applies to Etsy's fees unless you have provided an ABN and confirmed you are registered for GST.

The GST-on-fees point is worth stating plainly because it is worth a full percentage point of gross on a typical order, and providing an ABN takes a couple of minutes.

An example

An AUD 65 item with AUD 12 shipping is an AUD 77 order. Listing AUD 0.20. Transaction 6.5% = AUD 5.01. Processing 3% plus 0.25 = AUD 2.56. Regulatory 0.32% = AUD 0.25. Total AUD 8.02, which is 10.4% of gross.

Without an ABN on file, 10% GST on those fees adds AUD 0.80, taking the total to AUD 8.82 and the rate to 11.5%. That AUD 0.80 an order, across 400 orders a year, is AUD 320 for an administrative omission.

What the number hides

Australian domestic postage is expensive relative to the item values most Etsy shops trade at, and the parcel bands step sharply. An item that fits a large letter costs a fraction of one that needs a parcel, and the difference frequently exceeds the entire Etsy fee. Packaging design has more effect on Australian shop margins than fee optimisation.

International shipping from Australia compounds the problem, the country's distance from its main export markets means overseas postage often exceeds the item value on lower-priced goods. Shops that succeed internationally from Australia are generally selling at higher price points where the postage is a tolerable share.

What this changes

Add your ABN to your Etsy shop settings and confirm your GST registration status. If registered, Etsy stops charging GST on its fees; if not registered but you have an ABN, the treatment differs, either way, having it on file is what prevents the default and most expensive outcome.

Then design packaging to the postage bands rather than to the product. Getting an item under the large letter threshold, where it is possible, typically saves several dollars an order, a larger and more durable saving than anything available on the fee side.

Why Australian shops live or die on packaging

Australia Post prices step sharply between bands, and the item values most Etsy shops trade at sit close enough to those steps that packaging decides the postage more often than the product does. A small parcel and a large letter can differ by several dollars for the same contents, and on an AUD 45 order that difference exceeds the entire Etsy fee.

The practical work is measuring your packed items against the band thresholds rather than the product against them. A 2cm-thick item in a 4cm box is paying parcel rates for air, and swapping to a rigid mailer that keeps it under the threshold is a one-off change that saves on every order afterwards.
