Etsy Ads Budget Calculator
What a daily budget buys, and the ACOS it needs to work.
Plan an Etsy Ads budget from your daily spend, cost per click and conversion rate, with the break-even ACOS your margin can support.
Etsy shop averages typically run 1-3%.
Advertising cost of sale
36.8%
above your 30.0% break-even
At this ACOS every advertised order loses money. Either the conversion rate or the order value has to rise, or the bid has to fall.
How the Etsy Ads Budget Calculator works
Etsy Ads bills per click regardless of whether the click sells anything, so the number that matters is not the daily budget but the advertising cost of sale it produces. If your margin is 30%, an ACOS above 30% is losing money on every advertised order.

What the formula says
Etsy Ads is a cost-per-click auction inside Etsy search. You set a daily budget, Etsy spends it, and you get clicks at whatever the auction costs. The metrics that matter are cost per click, conversion rate on that traffic, and the contribution on an order, and the relationship between them is: cost per order = cost per click ÷ conversion rate.
The break-even test is whether cost per order is below contribution per order, where contribution is the order value less Etsy's fees, materials, postage and packaging. Not less your labour, labour is a fixed cost of running the shop and including it in a marginal advertising decision sets the bar in the wrong place.
A real example
A daily budget of $8 at a cost per click of $0.32 buys 25 clicks a day. At a 2.4% conversion rate that is 0.6 orders a day, so roughly 18 orders a month, at a cost per order of $13.33.
If those orders average $38.50 gross with $4.23 of Etsy fees, $8.40 of materials, $7.20 of postage and $0.85 of packaging, contribution is $17.82. At $13.33 of ad cost, each advertised order clears $4.49, profitable, and thin enough that a small rise in cost per click erases it.
Raise the cost per click to $0.45 and cost per order becomes $18.75, which is above contribution. The ads are then losing $0.93 an order while the dashboard shows more sales.
The usual mistakes
Etsy attributes an ad sale on a 30-day window, which means a buyer who clicked your ad, left, and returned through search a fortnight later is counted as an ad sale. Some share of what the dashboard reports as advertising revenue would have arrived anyway, and no report distinguishes them.
The other distortion runs the other way: advertising raises a listing's sales velocity, and velocity feeds Etsy's organic ranking. Some advertised orders buy organic position that produces unattributed sales later. That effect is real and unmeasurable, which is why the honest way to test Etsy Ads is to switch them off for a fortnight and watch total orders rather than attributed ones.
Using the result
Set the budget by working backwards from contribution rather than by picking a comfortable number. Your maximum sustainable cost per order is your contribution per order; your maximum cost per click is that figure times your conversion rate. Everything above that loses money per order however good the totals look.
Advertise the listings that already convert, not the ones that need help. A listing converting at 4% supports nearly twice the cost per click of one converting at 2.2%, and paying to send traffic to a listing that does not convert is the most reliable way to lose money on Etsy Ads. Start with your best three or four listings, prove the arithmetic there, and widen only when it holds.
Which listings to advertise, and which to leave alone
Advertising amplifies whatever a listing already does. Sending paid traffic to a listing that converts at 4% costs half as much per order as sending it to one converting at 2%, and the difference is entirely in the listing rather than in the bid.
That makes the selection more important than the budget. The listings worth advertising are the ones with proven conversion, enough reviews to reassure a cold visitor, and a price point where the contribution comfortably exceeds the cost per order. The ones worth leaving alone are new listings with no reviews, low-priced items where the contribution cannot support any meaningful cost per acquisition, and anything with a conversion rate you have not measured.
Start with three or four proven listings and a small daily budget, run it for a fortnight without touching it, and check cost per order against contribution. Etsy Ads punishes fiddling, the auction needs time to settle and the data needs volume to mean anything. Once the arithmetic holds on those listings, widen deliberately rather than switching the whole shop on at once.
Where to go next
The Etsy Ads Budget question rarely arrives on its own. These are the ones that usually come with it:
- Etsy Offsite Ads Fee Calculator — The 12-15% commission, and the per-order cap.
- Etsy Profit Calculator — What you keep after fees, materials and shipping.
- Conversion Rate Calculator — Points look small; the revenue effect is not.
- Etsy Fee Calculator — Every Etsy fee on one sale, itemised.
Not financial advice. Marketplace fees change, and they vary by country, plan and seller status. Every rate here is an editable default, not a quoted price, check the platform's current fee schedule before you price a product against it. This is not tax or business advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is ACOS and what should mine be?
Advertising cost of sale, ad spend divided by revenue from ads. Your break-even ACOS equals your profit margin after all other fees. If you keep 25% of an order, ads costing more than 25% of revenue lose money, so profitable campaigns need an ACOS meaningfully below that.
How much should I spend on Etsy Ads per day?
Start at the $1 minimum and raise only once you have enough clicks to judge conversion, which usually needs at least a few hundred. Budgets set higher than your data supports mostly buy clicks on listings that were never going to convert.
Why do my ads get clicks but no sales?
Almost always the listing rather than the ad. Ads buy traffic; the photos, price, reviews and shipping cost decide whether that traffic buys. A listing that converts poorly organically will convert poorly with paid traffic, only now you are paying for the visit.
Do Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads both charge me?
They are separate. Etsy Ads is on-site, charged per click, and you control the budget. Offsite Ads is external, charged as a commission on attributed sales. An order can carry both if it was clicked on-site and attributed off-site.
