The arithmetic

Payment processing is a percentage of the gross order plus a fixed amount per transaction, and both parts vary by the country your shop is registered in. In the United States it is 3% plus $0.25. In the United Kingdom it is 4% plus £0.20. In Germany it is 4% plus €0.30. India, Canada and Australia each have their own.

The formula is: (item price + shipping + gift wrap) × rate + fixed. The fixed component is what makes this fee behave differently from the transaction fee, as a percentage of the order it falls as the order grows, so the effective processing rate on a $12 order is far higher than on a $60 one.

Numbers on it

On a $38.50 US order: 3% is $1.16, plus $0.25, giving $1.41. That is 3.66% of the order.

On a $12 order: 3% is $0.36, plus $0.25, giving $0.61. That is 5.08% of the order, nearly a point and a half more, for the same shop on the same day.

On a $95 order: 3% is $2.85, plus $0.25, giving $3.10. That is 3.26%. The fixed 25 cents has shrunk to a rounding error.

The pattern is the reason low-priced items are structurally hard on Etsy. Combined with the 20-cent listing fee, which is also fixed, a $12 sale carries 45 cents of fixed charges, 3.75% of the order before any percentage fee applies at all.

What it does not tell you

The rate shown here is the domestic one. If the buyer's card was issued in a different country from your shop, Etsy applies a higher processing rate, and if the currencies differ there is a conversion charge on top. For a shop with substantial international traffic, the blended processing cost sits meaningfully above the domestic figure.

The fee is also not fully refunded on a returned order. The percentage element generally comes back and the fixed element generally does not, which means every refunded order costs you at least the fixed portion plus the listing fee, before the goods and the postage.

What follows from it

Use the effective percentage rather than the headline rate when you price by tier. If your cheapest listings sit around $12, they are carrying roughly 5% processing against 3.3% on your $60 items, and pricing everything off one assumed rate under-prices the small ones.

Bundling is the direct fix. Two $12 items sold as one $24 order pay one set of fixed fees instead of two, which saves 45 cents, roughly 1.9% of the order, achieved by changing nothing about the products. That is a larger gain than most sellers get from a week of listing optimisation.

Why the rate differs by country

Etsy's processing rate reflects the underlying card interchange in each market, which is set by regulation rather than by Etsy. European interchange is capped, American interchange is not, and the rates Etsy charges do not follow that pattern in the direction most sellers expect, UK and German shops pay 4% against the US 3%, despite European interchange being lower.

The practical consequence is that fee guidance written for one market misleads in another by a full percentage point, and most of the Etsy advice available online is written for the US. A UK seller working from an American calculator will understate processing by a quarter.

The fixed element differs too, and it matters more than the percentage at low price points. Twenty-five cents in the US, twenty pence in the UK, thirty cents in Germany, on a $12 order that spread is worth a third of a percentage point, which compounds with the higher percentage to make low-priced European listings meaningfully harder than their American equivalents.
